White's Devonshire (1878) informs that the "water from a well in Hatherleigh Moor, called St. John's Well, was formerly used at baptisms." The baptismal font at the parish church is noted in Pevsner (1952): "Font. Square, Norman, with graceful ogee-cupola cover (C18?)." It is mentioned in the Northmoor Team Ministry web site [www.northmoorteam.org.uk/mediagallery/album.php?aid=6&s=20160209124843852#20160209124843852] [accessed 21 December 2018] as "a Norman font(c.12)". The entry for this church in the CRSBI (2018) notes: "The church [...] is primarily late 15thc. and early 16thc. with roughly coursed rubble walling. The font is the only Romanesque feature. [...] Located at the W end of the nave. It has a modern, square plinth, and simple round bases merging together beneath the five shafts. There is one central shaft and one at each angle supporting the font. The font has a plain, square bowl, chamfered at the lower edge, and unlined, with a cylindrical basin and drainage hole. The outer supports are of yellow/orange sandstone. The stem, bowl and base (all separate pieces) are of greyish stone. Vertical toolmarks are visible on the bowl. "
