Font Notes:
No individual entry for this Whorlton found in the Domesday survey. The listing ofr this font in Historic England [Listing NGR: NZ1067714727] reads: "Font, adjacent to south porch of Church of St. Mary [...] Font. Probably late-c15, Single sandstone block. Octagonal-plan bowl and stem. Base also octagonal in plan but with alternating long and shorter sides. This font came from the medieval church at Whorlton which was demolished c.1848." Octagonal baptismal font located now [ca. 2003] outside the church, by the entrance. The font has an octagonal basin with shallow plain vertical sides, with a very tall chamfered underbowl, also octagonal and plain; the base consists of a very short stem and a sloping quadrangular lower base partly interred in the ground. The font is weathered and damaged, with lichens growing on the stone and undergrowth cracking through the lower base. This font is captioned "Saxon" (which it is certainly not) in a local web site [www.stmarysbarnardcastle.org.uk/whorlton_tour.htm]. The inside of the church houses a mid-19th century baptismal font [cf. Index entry for Whorlton No. 2 (Durham) for the latter].
