Described in Oliver (1840-1842) as an octagonal baptismal font "ornamented with the quatrefoil", and located at the lower end of the chantry. In Pevsner (1952): "Font, the usual octagonal Perp[endicular]." Curtis ([ca. 1890?]) writes: "The font is ancient, and has a brass cover; it was the gift of the late Rev. H.T. Hellacombe, M.A., 1880. Between 1869 and 1877 this church was rebuilt, excepting the tower" [Hellacombe's gift would be the cover, not the font]. The British Listed Buildings entry for this building [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-85342-church-of-st-mary-ideford] [accessed 4 March 2012] notes: "Font with an octagonal bowl with quatrefoils on an arcaded octagonal stem described by Pevsner as 'Perp' but possibly recut in 1897 (date on font cover)." [NB: the original church probably Norman but we have no information on the earlier font of this church.]
