The Victoria History of the Counties of England (Wiltshire, vol. 8, 1965) cites a reference to an entry that appeared in the 'Wiltshire Notes & Queries' vol. 1 (1893-1895: 475), according to which, "part of a Norman font [...] was found re-used in the tower in 1894". The original was a brief communication to the said journal from a T.N. Powell, of Warminster, and appeared in the June 1895 issue: "Whe the tower of the church of North Bavant, near Warminster, was rebuilt in 1894, a doof sized portion of a Norman font was found : it was turned upside down and formed the first of the tower steps. It is now kept in the Priest's chamber in the church tower; the Vicar, however, would like to have it restored to its original shape and purpose. T.N. Powell. Warminster." Pevsner & Cherry (1975) mention only the present font: "An C18 baluster".
