Church Notes: "Dear Mr Torrens, You enquired about the baptismal fonts in St Mary's Church Wolborough and St Leonard's Church Newton Abbot. I can confirm that the font in St Mary's Wolborough is Norman. St Leonard's Church as you note was demolished in 19th century and its replacement building was closed some years ago. I have no knowledge at all about St Leonard's font or what happened to it. Yours truly, Revd Russell Chamberlain. Rector of Wolborough." (e-mail to BSI, 5 March 2009)

In his visit to this church ca. 1825, Oliver (1840-1842) writes that "With the exception of a most ancient Font, I saw but little here to arrest attention." Stabb (1908) notes the font: "Norman with cable moulding." Described and illustrated in Clarke (1916) as one of twelve Devon fonts of about the same period [Norman/Late Norman] decorated with a prominent band of honeysuckle or palmetto motif all around the basin [the twelve are: Ashprington, Blackauton, Buckfastleigh, Denbury, Cornworthy, Dartmouth St. Petrock's, Paignton St Andrew's, Plymstock, South Brent, Thurlestone, Ugborough and Wolbororugh, all in Devon]. Clarke (ibid.) writes that this font is practically identical to the font at Thurlestone, both made of red sandstone. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as having a baptismal font of the Norman period. [NB: the parish web site [http://www.ogwol.org.uk/stmary.htm [accessed 4 March 2009]] notes: "The font is Norman with cable and chevron carving and is thought to have come from an earlier church on this site"]. In Pevsner (1952): "Norman, circular, with palmette decoration." Hoskins (1954), in his entry for Newton Abbot, mentions Wolborough and the Church of St Mary, in which he notes "a restored Norman font". [NB: a communication from the present [March 2009] Rector of Wolborough, the Revd. Russell Chamberlain, to BSI (e-mail of 5 March 2009), confirms the Norman font at Wolborough St. Mary's, but claims no knowledge of the whereabouts of the former font from Newton Abbot St. Leonard's -- cf.
