Described in Lysons (1806-1822) as of a group of "square Saxon fonts on circular pillars, or pedestals." Noted and illustrated in Stabb (1908): "The square Norman font [plate 119] has a kind of zigzag pattern cut round the four sides, and is supported on a low circular shaft resting on a square base." Described in Clarke (1921): "A good example of the table font is at Hittesleigh. It is all made of black marble. The square bowl is ornamented with incised zigzags which fill the entire depth. In the corners of the upper plane surface traces of shallow ornament remain. The hollow of the bowl is circular: it is lead-lined; on the rim are indications of four staples having been leaded in. It has a single substantial shaft, formed of three blocks; the upper block spreads to meet the bowl. The base is of Early English type, with a shallow water-rim moulding, and there is a shallow square plinth." Noted in Pevsner (1952): "Font. Norman, black stone, square with a simple incised zigzag."
