Scene Description: Source caption: "The present church building is dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury (Thomas Becket, 40th Archbishop of Canterbury, who was martyred in 1170). There is reason to believe that one of his murderers, William de Tracy, owned land stretching from about a mile up the Totnes road to a little south of where the present church stands. If that is so, then the earlier church which is known to have existed may have been built by de Tracy himself. Certainly the font, which came from the old church, dates from about that time."
