Font Notes:
The entry for "Hikelinga" in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG4124/hickling/] [accessed 16 December 2013] reports a church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) notes tha the church here was one of several endowed to Hickling Priory when it was founded by Theobald de Valoins in 1185: "The Church is dedicated to St. Mary, and was a rectory, valued at 30 marks, and appropriated to the priory, and a vicarage was founded, in the reign of Edward I [i.e., 1272-1307] the vicar is said to have convenient edifices". The present font is described in Pevsner & Wilson (1997) with date in the 14th century. Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with vertical sides, raised on a pedestal base and plinth, both also octagonal; the side panels of basin and base are decorated with alternating assorted tracery motifs of square rosettes and trefoil arches; ohe of the sides of the basin shows considerable damage, now repaired, consistent with the forceful removal of the old cover staples. Wooden font cover, octagonal and flat; appears modern. [NB: we have no information on the font from the original church here].
