Font Notes:
There is an entry for [West] Tisted [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU6529/west-tisted/] [accessed 27 July 2017], and it reports a church in it. The Hampshire Antiquary and Naturalist, vol. 1 (1891): 79, reprints an article originally from The Hampshire Independent (31 May 1890) which includes an account of a visit of The Hampshire Field Club to a East Meon and several other churches in its neighbourhood; in one of those churches, the one at West Tisted, "[T]he font was pronounced to be as old as the early part of the building [i.e., Domesday survey or earlier], and in the doorway an ancient stoup was pointed out." The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "There was a church in West Tisted at the time of the Domesday Survey [i.e., 1086] [...] the font, which stands in front of the blocked north door, and is perfectly plain with a round bowl on a roughly worked stem of uncertain date though ancient." The Historic Churches Preservation Trust mentions a "Norman font' in this church [source: 'Recent Grants' issue of the Grants Cttee. Meeting of 22 June 2004, www.historicchurches.org.uk] [accessed 23 January 2009]. The present font cover is modern, round, flat and plain, with a flat metal cross decoration and rring handle, but the upper rim of the font shows a cut that would have been made in relation to an old cover. [cf. Index entry for West Tisted No. 2 for an ancient holy-water stoup listed for this church]
