Font Notes:
Illustrated in Daubeny (1921). Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Font. C13. Octagonal bowl, with three-lobed foliage on nearly every side, influenced no doubt by the Norman font at Duntisbourne Abbots. Slightly concave chamfered moulding below the bowl." Baptismal font probably of the Early English period; it consists of a a square basin with slightly tapering sides chamfered at the angles [NB: the chamfer is so wide that the basin could be described as octagonal]; the large panels of the sides are decorated with an early trefoil leaf motif, each side having a branch with four leaves; the chamfered angles are decorated with a diagonal striated pattern; the chamfered underbowl is plain but ends below in a moulding; octagonal pedestal base and quadrangular lower base, both plain. Although the shape of this font is quite different from the one at nearby Duntisbourne Abbots [cf. Index entry], some of the decorative motifs could be related; was one font inspired on the other?
