Eclaron No. 1

Baptismal font installed in the church in 1614 in the time of Edme Thomas, parish priest at Eclaron, and payed in part by his brother Pierre Thomas, who had been himself parish priest of the same church from 1597 to 1611 [source: Bernard Aubépart, curé d'Eclaron 1995, reproduced in www.eclaron.net/eglise.htm]. The entry for this church in the French Wikipedia [https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Église_Saint-Laurent_d'Éclaron] [accessed 15 August 2025] reports a font and a stoup in it: "Les fonts baptismaux datent de 1614 ; la date est gravée dessus. Ils sont installés en 1614 alors qu'Edme Thomas est curé d'Éclaron [...] Ils sont composés de deux assises de calcaire sculpté, la cuve à gordons est carrée, le bassin est en zinc ou en plombet le couvercle en cuivre jaune. Ils mesurent 1,075 m de hauteur sans le couvercle [...] et 0,87 m de côté [...] Ils font l'objet d'un classement monuments historiques au titre objet depuis le 28 mars 1980 [...] Le bénitier en fonte de fer peinte et dorée qui date de 1619 fait l'objet d'un classement monuments historiques au titre objet depuis le 15 septembre 1965". Il est en forme de cloche renversée, avec des inscriptions. Il mesure 45,5 cm de hauteur et 60 cm de diamètre. Il a été offert par Guillaume Hurbal et Béatrice de Bonnard, son épouse". The baptismal font is listed in Palissy [ref.: PM52000429]: "Fonts baptismaux [...] Pierre : taillé [...] Collatéral sud [...] Limite 16e siècle 17e siècle". Illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: AP52W00973 and AP52W00974]; the illustrations show a rather uncharacteristic font shape: a square urn-shape basin with rounded corners tapering towards the base, the sides busily decorated with foliage motifs; the font cover, described in Palissy [cf. supra] as "en cuivre jaune" is a dome with a ball finial and appears made of brass.
