By the side of the Norman font at this church [cf. Index entry for Grindale No. 1] is the fragment of an old basin, probably from a medieval baptismal font; the object is so eroded that it is hard to deduce its original form from the remaining fragment, perhaps hemispherical or polygonal on the outside, with a round inner well that appears to be without a drain. This is probably the "part of a font" that Bulmer (1892) reported as being in the churchyard, "supposed to be a relic of the ancient church of Argam" [NB: a fragment of a font at Argam is mentioned 'in passim' in a communication to BSI by Rita Wood]
