Church Notes: Lewis (1833) writes that the early church here was destroyed by the Danes in 987; the National Gazetteer (1868) gives the date of the event as 988 [NB: this same source informs that part of the older church dates from the 14th century or earlier. The same source informs that St Restitutis, also known as St. Rhystud, was "sometime Bishop of Carleon-on-Usk and an immigrant from Letavia, or Llydaw. (Llydaw was, until recently, thought to be Britanny in France, but scholars have tended recently to place it much nearer, perhaps S.E. Wales.)"]
No entry found for this church in Meyrick (1808). Evans (1914) mentions no font in it. The entry in COFLEIN [https://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/281/details/st-rhystuds-church-llanrhystud] [accessed 14 January 2020] notes: "The church of St Rhystud [...] was built in Decorated style in 1852-4, on the site of the medieval parish church [...] Fittings include a medieval octagonal plain font on a nineteenth-century base". The Llanrhystud web site [www.llanrhystud.co.uk] reproduces descriptive notes extracted from a leaflet by Mathew M. Griffiths, of unknown date and now in the Ceredigion [i.e., Cardiganshire] Archives: "The font is an octagonal stone bason with lead lining, and also belonged to the former church. It is now mounted on a modern stone pillar."
