There are nine entries for Swaffham [Bulbeck and Prior] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/swaffham-bulbeck-and-prior/] [accessed 20 July 2016], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The RCHM (1972) notes: "Font: octagonal bowl and stem with moulded cap and base, standing on a chamfered sub-base, 13th-century." Noted in the Victoria County History (Cambridge and the Isle of Ely, vol. 10, 2002) notes: "In the 12th century the church probably belonged to the Bolbec manor until it was given, probably shortly before c. 1200, to endow the newly founded Swaffham priory. […] The earliest surviving part is the four-stage west tower, probably early 13th-century […] The octagonal font is 13th-century". Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin raised on an octagonal pedestal base and located at the W end of the nave. The Gentleman's Magazine (issue for December 1842, p. 641) reports of a 10 November meeting of the Cambridge Camden Society in which "The Committee are having a beautiful Font cover executed, at the expense of the Incumbent, by the Society's woodcarver".
