There is an entry for this Pilton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST5840/pilton/] [accessed 21 July 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). Tony Ethridge [www.worldisround.com/articles/352054/photo66.html] [accessed 29 April 2009] notes: "The medieval Font was lost for many years. It was discovered in the late 19th century being used as a horse trough and was returned to its present position". Medieval baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with a protruding upper rim with a crenellated band below it; the vertical sides are decorated with a blind arcade of round arches, one per face; it is raised on an octagonal pedestal base, plain and rather crude, and an octagonal plinth with kneeling stone; plain wooden cover, modern. Basin and base do not seem to belong together, and the lower piece looks suspiciously like an up-turned basin itself.
