The Hundred of Winterstoke appears in Domesday with 28 entries [http://opendomesday.org/hundred/winterstoke/] [accessed 7 May 2015], but Compton Bishop is not one of with an individual entry. A font here is described in Rutter (1829): "The font is plain and circular." The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland for 1868 mentions a font in this locality as one of the few traces left of its Norman church. Wade & Wade (1929) report: "The church contains a Norm[an] font (with a wooden cover dated 1617)". Pevsner (1958) mentions the font cover "dated 1617", but not the font. The Crook Peak Parish [www.crookpeakparish.org.uk/index.asp?pageid=78582] [accessed 10 September 2009] informs: "This church was dedicated by Bishop Jocelin on 13th July 1236 and legal documents show that Compton Church was given to Wells Cathedral in or before 1228. The south doorway and the font were however made for a church at least a century older […] The font is Norman and probably the oldest object in the church." The basin is cylindrical and has a chamfered underbowl, all plain; on a short cylindrical stem and a square lower base with spurs at the angles, and a circular plinth; the lining of the inner basin well is modern. The wooden cover is round and flat with radial arrises and an urn finial decorated with oak branches.
