Font Location in Church: Reported in South Australia in 1964
Century and Period: 17th - 18th century
Cognate Fonts: Another font of about the same period from Salisbury Cathedral that ended up also in South Australia
Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Shortt (1964: 168ff and pl. XIIb), who informs that in the Church of St. James at Delamere [formerly Glenburn] in South Australia a plaque informs that the baptismal font there "[...] was given in 1877 by the Vicar of St. Peter's Church, Britford / in the Diocese of Salisbury [...] / It had been in use in that Church for over 200 years", which would put it around 1677. A confusing source is cited in Shortt (ibid.), a pamphlet in which the Rector of Yankalilla refers to the font as "priceless and unmatched in Australia -- a touch with the Saxon period of our Church in England" [NB: how a 17th-century font of quasi-garden object design can provide a link with the Saxon period is rather provides a challenge to the imagination!]. The font consists of an octagonal basin with a rounded underbowl decorated with a moulding at top and a ribbed pattern all around the lower sides; the base consists of three volumes: two forming the baluster-type stem, and one the lower base, all octagonal , all moulded. Shortt (ibid.) mentions another such case of transplanted font to Australia from Wiltshire [cf. Index entry for Salisbury No. 3, St. Mary's Cathedral, now in Yankalilla].
