There is an entry for Hathersage in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK2381/hathersage/] [accessed 21 December 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Cox (1875-1877) notes the font at the west end of the church, octagonal, "of chalice-shaped design", decorated with three shields and other designs: "Two of the shields bear the arms of Eyre and Padley respectively"; Cox (ibid.) writes about the third coat of arms on the font, which also appears on the porch battlements, and apparently baffled some genealogists, though the experts appear agree on an identification as the old coat of arms of Padley. Armitage (1905) reports "a good Perp[endicular] font" in this church. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SK2339881854] notes: "Church. Principally C14 and C15, restored by Butterfield 1851-2, and with extensions and minor alterations in 1949. [...] Octagonal font of chalice form with heraldic shields of the Eyre, Barnake and Padley familities on three facets, and carved decoration to the others." Bunting (2001) mentions "the arms of Eyre and Padley" on the baptismal font at Hathersage, a medieval church. [source: transcription of Bunting's article in www.genuki.org.uk]. [cf. Index entry for note on a font found in a garden at Hathersage]
