Allen (1839?) writes: "This church […] was founded in or before 1309"; the new building after the fire of London (1666) "was erected in 1686, under the superintendance of sir Christopher Wren […] The font, an octagon basin in a pillar of the same form, is very finely sculptured, and stands within a tastefully carved ballustrade near the altar. The cover of the font is ornamented with scrolls in the form of a crown, within which is a white dove" [NB: this bird, caught between gilded scroll ribs, looks more like a cockatoo than a dove! The ribs themselves end at the top in cherub heads with very fat cheeks, and appear to be uncomfortably strained wearing their wings as collars]. Described in Blatch (1995): "The octagonal marble font is 17th century and has a very pretty cover enclosing a dove holding an olive branch and capped with gilded flames".
