Noted in Allen (1839?): "The font is a circular basin of white marble, with four cherubic heads attached to it; the cover represents a square church, with a niche in each face, on which are statues of the four evangelists distinguished by their proper symbols." Both font and lid are described in Blatch (1995): "Font and font-cover The marble font in a railed enclosure was made by William Kempster, one of Wren's best craftsmen (his brother Christopher carved the stonework) in 1686. The font-cover by William Emmett is a delightful piece, showing the four Evangelists in niches under shaped arches, the whole looking like a small pavilion." According to James (1985), "the pulpit with its enormous sounding-board and the richly font cover are both by W. Gray and both date from the same period."
