Font Location in Church: Reported outside the church ca. 1990
Century and Period: Medieval
Font Notes:
Baptismal font consisting of a cylindrical basin with a chamfered underbowl, raised on a cylindrical pedestal base; both pieces are plain except for a roll moulding that ends in a snake head pointed diagonally up right at the bottom of the stem. The upper rim of the basin shows one iron staple still in place while the opposite side appears to have been repaired, both evidence of an early cover. The font is now raised on a wooden hexagonal plinth, modern. The Catálogo Monumental de Navarra (1990?..., vol. II*: 178) records two objects situated in the outside of this church, a baptismal font and a holy-water stoup; the font is described as a plain stone from a medieval date; the stoup is described as having a basin decorated with ribbed pattern [="avenerada"] and is dated to the 16th century [cf. Index entry for Aranarache No. 2 for a later holy-water stoup in the same church, and to Aranarache No. 3 for another similar stoup in the Ermita de San Lorenzo, in the same locality] [We are grateful to Javier Torrens, of Pamplona, Spain, for the photographs of this font]
