Wade & Wade (1929) write: "The modern and very ugly font is made of a single block of alabaster." Described in Pevsner (1958) as the work of "Henry Wilson, Sedding's principal pupil" [i.e., John Dando Sedding (1838-1891), Victorian church architect]. A recent [2004] photograph of this font by Phil Draper can be found at [http://www.wishful-thinking.org.uk/genuki/SOM/NortonSubHamdon/StMary3.html] [accessed 30 March 2008]. Recent [?] photographs of the church and the font are available in the Parish web site [http://www.nortonchurch.org.uk/interior.asp] [accessed 30 March 2008]. It is a baptismal font of original design [the reason for its inclusion in this Index despite its late date, 1904: it has the tub-shaped form of the Norman tradition, to which it has added a pattern of helicoidal ribs, much like, for instance, the Gothic font at Barcelona cathedral; the lower base is a square, with four monsters, something between a water-dragon and a monkfish, that share a single body shaped like a roll-moulding around the bottom of the basin, and then lie at the four angles of the base. It appears to be made of a white marble with ochre veins. It stands on a square plinth]. The font cover is a small octagonal table-like structure, with open sides forming an arcade, the sides decorated with tracery.
