Font Notes:
Two nineteenth-century illustrations of this font are listed in entries of the William Salt Library, Stafford [www.staffordshire.gov.uk/live/pdf/archives/fis-lei.pdf]: 1)reference SV VII.41 (45/9305): sepia drawing dated 1843, by 'J.B.' [John Buckley] -- 6 in. x 6 in. "'Font in Longdon Church.' showing a tub-shaped font with a band of carving under the rim, and a carved wreath at the base. The body is decorated by a design of diagonal ribs." -- 2)SV.VII.42 (45/9306): sepia wash drawing dated 8 September 1842, by 'A.E. Everitt.' "'Font in Longdon Church.' Showing a tub-shaped font with a band of carving under the rim, and a carved wreath at the base. The body is decorated by a design of diagonal ribs." This font appears to be a composite object consisting of two parts from differenet periods; the cylindrical basin, decorated a band of palmette motif around the upper basin side, and a diagonal ribbed or piped pattern below, may be late-Norman, whereas the narrower, but also cylindrical, pedestal base shows a deeply-cut foliated pattern dating from more than a century later, and said locally to have been recovered from the old cathedral of Lichfield; the two blocks have been mounted on a moulded lower base of modern manufacture [NB: the two 19th-century illustrations above show the medieval foliated block resting directly on the ground; the round lower base with the three roll mouldings is modern]. The basin interior is lead-lined. The oak cover is round and flat, with carved upper surface and a metal ring handle; appears modern.
