Font Notes:
There is and entry for this Kirkilington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE3181/kirklington/] [accessed 23 November 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Whellan (1859) writes: "The new Caen stone font is the gift of the architect, Mr. Jones, of York." Whellan (ibid.) also notes that the church "has recently undergone a complete restoration, and was re-opened for Divine Worship on the 5th of last January (1859) by the Lord Bishop of Ripon". Glynne's visit to this church on 19 April 1864 (in Butler, 2007) reports a new font. Noted in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 1, 1914): "The font is modern and has a circular bowl with elaborate ornament; it stands at the west end of the south aisle." The baptismal font in this church appears to have a composite nature: the basin is certainly modern [the 1857-1859 restoration by G. Fowler Jones noted in Whellan, cf. supra], but the base and the plinth could be medieval. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE3186981040] notes; "Church. Early C13, C14 and C15 with C19 restoration. [...] Font: C19 but on circular base of C14." [NB: the church goes back to the 12th century, but we have n information on the earlier font(s) of this church, unless the base and plinth of the current font were to prove of an earlier date]
