Scene Description: Source caption: "Church of St Oswald, Hauxwell. An ancient church of mostly the 11th and 13th centuries. The top part of the tower is circa 1600, whilst the Romanesque porch entrance is quite obviously 19th century, but with a genuine Norman doorway and arch within."

Church Notes: was there a late-8thC / early-19thC church here?
There is an entry for [East] Hauxwell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE1693/east-hauxwell/] [accessed 21 November 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 1, 1914) notes: "The length of the chancel has been about doubled in the 13th century, the west tower added about the same time, and the porch and vestry are modern, but the rest of the church retains the plan and several of the architectural features which belong to its setting-out at the end of the 11th century. [...] The font has an octagonal bowl, modern or recut; it stands on an 18th-century baluster stem, which is placed on an octagonal base, apparently that of a 13th-century column." Pevsner (1985) notes: "Font. The base a base of a C13 pier. Another in the churchyard W of the tower. The upper part probably C18." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE1656193088] notes: "Church. C11, C13. [...] Octagonal font on C18 baluster shaft set on C13 column base." The composite baptismal font consists of a plain octagonal basin of vertical sides and rounded underbowl raised on a slender moulded cylindrical base and a graded octagonal lower base. The well of the basin is lead lined. [We are grateful to Colin Hinson, of www.yorkshireCDbooks.co.uk, for the photograph of this font]. [NB: the entry for a cross shaft and base at Hauxwell's church in Lang's Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture (vol. VI: Northern Yorkshire, 2001; p. 122) dates it "Late eighth to early nineth century"].
