There are four entries for [Old] Malton [rariant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE7972/old-malton/] [accessed 3 December 2019] one of which reports a church in it. The current baptismal font in the church of St. Mary's, Old Malton, is described in Betjeman (1958) as being of the 19th century and "based on that at Holy Trinity, Hull". The plinth bears a brass plate with the name of the donor and the date of the donation, 1889. It is included here for that reason and because it is the fourth baptismal font known in this town, the other three being Norman vessels auctioned off ca. 1890 -- cf. Index entries for Old Malton Nos. 1-3 for the lost fonts]. Lionel Wall (e-mail communication of 10 August 2013 to BSI) reported a Romanesque-like font "font being used as a planter in the grounds of the adjoining Nursing Home"; there are several elements of this font that suggest a Victorian carving: pristine state of the upper rim, odd combination of motifs; lace pattern characteristic of the 19th century; wear pattern, etc.
