Church Notes: present church ca.1782 replaced a medieval structure "constructed on the edge of the Fountains Abbey estate" [source: www.westgallerychurches.com/Yorks/North/Aldfield/Aldfield.html [accessed 12 September 2019]]
There are three entries for Aldfield [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE2669/aldfield/] [accessed 12 September 2019] none of which mentions cleric or church in it. Lawton's (1842) entry for this church notes: "The font, which is of grey marble, is supposed to have been brought from Fountains Abbey; the bason, which is carved, stands on a pyramidical cluster of four columns with a square base." Sheehan (1871) writes: "The Chapel of St. Lawrence was founded in the 13th century, but the present edifice was erected about the year 1783.[...] the pulpit and font are neat. The old font, said to have been "the great holy-water stoup at Fountains-Abbey" stands in a garden opposite the chapel." Kelly's Directory of 1913 reports "a fine font of grey marble, formerly used as the great holy-water stoup at Fountains Abbey". Described in Betjeman (1958): "lovely 13th-cent. font admired by Flaxman". The entry for this church in Destinations-UK.com [www.destinations-uk.com/articles.php?link=articles&country=scotland&id=407&articletitle=St Lawrence the Martyr, Aldfield, North Yorkshire] [accessed 12 September 2019], however, notes: "The marble font is designed like the 13th century one in the Fountains Abbey museum. It is thought to have come from the private chapel of Studley Hall." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE2658269471] gives the date as "Mid - late C18" and mentions no font in it. The font consists of a quatrefoil basin inside and out, decorated with a double moulding at the upper rim and stylised foliage motif on the sides of the bowl; clustered colonnettes decorated with roll-mouldings as capitals and bases; moulded lower base. On a quadrangular plinth.
