No indivdual entry found for this Newton in the Domesday survey. Described in Herefordshire (1931-1934, vol. I: 206): "Font: round bowl, cut down and re-tooled, late 12th or early 13th-century, base with shallow moulded edge, probably 13th-century." A history of the church published in 1911 by George John Tuck, vicar of Newton, vicar of Newton [reproduced in The History of Ewas Lacy [www.ewyaslacy.org.uk/Newton/Foundation-of-St-John-s-Church-Newton/1911-1984/gc_nwt_3050] [accessed 18 August 2019] refers to the low cost -£700- of the new church in 1884, because the building materials were readily at hand, and " much of the interior furnishing was given by other parishes", among which, "The massive Norman font is apparently very old, and may have served for centuries in another church before it came to Newton", but unfortunately it does not mention the site whence the font originated.
