Noted by John Sleigh, in The Reliquary (issue of July 1864: 21): "In the churchyard are two stone coffins found when the present spire crowned church was rebuilt in 1847 beneath the foundations of the old edifice erected some two hundred years ago and the capacious bowl of an ancient font with a waving snake in high relief on the outside biting its own tail fit emblem of eternity". Pevsner (1975 c1974) describes the baptismal font at All Saints' Grindon as "Norman, with one wavy band or ornament" and does not mention any other font, but the illustration of the font in the parish web site shows an octagonal basin decorated with symbols within large quatrefoil windows, and raised on an octagonal pedestal, that is of a later date than the Norman font described in Pevsner et al. [cf. Index entry for Grindon No. 2 for this later font] [image source: http://members.madasafish.com/~cwthornber/html/grindon.html]. An entry in the index of the William Salt Library, Stafford [www.staffordshire.gov.uk/live/pdf/archives/fis-lei.pdf] lists under reference SV IV.228a: "Font in Grindon Church: sepia drawing (25 May 1847) / 'Remains of the ancient font belonging to the Church at Grindon, now turned out into the Church Yard.' Showing a plain, tub-shaped font, with a band of wavy carving under the rim. 'J.B.,' (John Buckler.) 4 inches x 4 inches."
