There are two owners listed in the two entries for this Bilton [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TA1532/bilton/] [accessed 29 October 2019] neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Described in Bulmer's Directory... of East Yorkshire (1892): "The font is octagonal, and on one of its facets, in high relief, is depicted the baptism of Christ. The font is covered by a very hansome conical cap of wood." [quoted in the Bilton entry in www.genuki.org.uk]. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York East Riding, vol. 7, 2002) notes: " Swine parish evidently included a chapel at Bilton in 1285, when its burial ground was mentioned. [...] he church, formerly of ST. MARY MAGDALEN but by 1823 dedicated to ST. PETER, [...] was rebuilt by Payn Dawnay, lord of the manor, [...] with, or for, his sister Lydia Dawnay, and re-opened in 1852"; no font mentioned in the entry.
