Holy-water stoup consisting of a rather shallow, roughly hemispherical basin decorated with clerical figures all around (some mitred, with scrolls, etc.), and with single seated human figure as pedestal base. This object appears illustrated in a 19th-century, in the on-line inventory of the Museo del Duomo di Fidenza [www.museoduomofidenza.it] [no. C36]. According to this latter source, the present stoup [acquasantiera] is a composite object made up in 1857 with the basin of the cathedral's old baptismal font and an old telemon or atlante figure [both with individual inventory numbers in the museum inventory]. Described and illustrated in Francovich (1952), who identifies Pope Alexander II and notes the inscription. Noted in Barasch (1971): "remarkable holy-water basin, an Italian work of the late eleventh century [...] in the Cathedral of Borgo San Donnino" [NB: Barasch (ibid.) refers to Porter, Arthur Kingsley Porter's 'Lombard architecture' (New Haven, 1917) (ii, 173ff) -- [TO BE FOLLOWED UP]]. Barasch (ibid.) notes on the basin sides "groups of half-length figures, apparently representing four scenes of a ritual character; the benediction of a novice nun, and the consecration of the holy-water. In the last mentioned scene there appears, as some scholars believe, the figure of Pope Alexander II who prescribed the use of holy-water". [NB: the description of this object depends on the source used. The object, referred to some times as 'font', at other rimes as 'acquasantiera', is presented at times with a carved pedestal base, as in the Catalogo generale dei Bebi Culturali [https://catalogo.beniculturali.it/detail/HistoricOrArtisticProperty/0800211066] [accessed 1 October 2022], with attribution to the Maestro Dei Profeti (workshop), Benedetto Antelami, whereas the museum displays it on a plain modern base].
