Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary's, Raskelf. Tucked away at the SW end of the village, this church looks Victorian, but hides medieval work within. The weatherboarded belfry/tower is medieval and was restores in the 20thC. Probably unique in North Yorkshire."

Bulmer's Directory... (1890) notes: "The font is of great antiquity, probably as old as the original church." The entry for the Easingwold parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "At the end of the 12th century the church consisted of a chancel and a nave with north aisle, and of this the north arcade and perhaps the west wall remain. [...] The circular moulded font dates from the late 12th century and is surmounted by a 17th-century wooden cover." Morris (1931) notes: "Norman font, with 17th-cent. cover." In Betjeman (1958): "Norman tub font with an elegant 17th-century cover. Pevsner (1985) does not mention the font but describes the font cover: "C17. A very nice piece of radially set S- and reversed C- curves." The font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a single moulding about 2/3 down; it is raised on a round-to-square lower base decorated with a large leaf (?) or spur at the angles. Several areas of the basin, including the upper rim show repaired damge.
