There is an entry for this Bulmer [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SE6967/bulmer/] [accessed 5 October 2015]; it mentions a priest and a church in it. A font here is described in Bulmer's Directory (1890): "The font is hemispherical and large enough for immersion". The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 2, 1923) notes: "There was a church and a priest in Bulmer in 1086. [...] The walls of the existing nave date apparently from the 11th century, and may be either before or after the Conquest. [...] The 13th-century font has a circular bowl with an octagonal stem and base." Morris (1931) writes: "Huge, circular (?) 12th-cent. font." The font, which may be of a composite nature, consists of roughly cylindrical basin with rounded lower side to a flat underbowl, a plain octagonal pedestal of straight sides and a slightly wider lower base, also octagonal, decorated with mouldings. The basin appears to have been re-tooled, and only the upper rim retains a patina of the original stone. The flat wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with an acorn finial-handle; modern oak.
