References to the early baptisms in the island do not seem to refer to a particular or individual font used [if any such was in use they would have been destroyed], as noted in Jesus Hernandez Perera's Las primeras pilas bautismales en Canarias (ALMOGAREN. 9. (92) Pagss. 191 - 212) [Dialnet-LasPrimerasPilasBautismalesEnCanarias-8032097.pdf] [accessed 8 August 2025]: "Es defendible suponer que la Casa de Oración o "Almogarén", la modesta catedral de Telde, tuvo su pila bautismal donde cristianar a los neófitos isleños, pero, lo mismo que ocurrió con el templo, ningún rastro ha quedado de ella al ser destruida por los indígenas toda la edificación y sacrificados los últimos misioneros mártires"; nor did the Norman expedition of Bethencourt, Bontier and Le Verrier leave any evidence of fonts used except in a miniature illustration of the baptism of the first Canarian 'king' of Fuerteventura reproduced in Hernandez Perera [cf. supra] that shows an unlikely font in the open with the 'king' wearing a crown and kneeling before it: "una taza circular sobre pie redondo y astil cilíndrico con grueso nudo, más bien próxima al gusto de principios del XVI en que se iluminó el manuscrito". Hernandez Perera (ibid.) gives a reference to Francisco Caballero Mújica as source for the use of Gothic fonts made of ceramic glass in Seville: "puedo documentar que tanto en Lanzarote como en Fuerteventura se utilizaban sendas pilas bautismales góticas, de cerámica vidriada de color verde, seguramente de procedencia sevillana, como otras del estilo conservadas en otras islas a las que luego me referiré, que podrían datarse tal vez en las décadas finales del siglo XV." One such font is noted and illustrated in the Diario de Tenerife edition of "jueves, 20 junio , 2024" [https://www.diariodetenerife.info/cabildo-restaura-antigua-pila-bautismal-iglesia-concepcion-la-laguna/] [accessed 8 August 2025] anouncing the restoration of the vessel and its return to the Iglesia Matriz de Tenerife: "El Cabildo restaura la antigua pila bautismal de la iglesia de la Concepción de La Laguna. La pieza está realizada en barro moldeado y vidriado que le confiere un característico color verde"; a brief description of the font with a dating in the mid-16th century and the material of which it is made follows: "La pila bautismal o pila verde de la iglesia de la Concepción de La Laguna, está datada entre 1555-1556 y se atribuye a una obra de taller anónimo sevillano. Consta de dos piezas, una ancha taza carenada y un fuste cilíndrico. Sobre la superficie exterior de la taza y los extremos del pedestal se disponen profusos relieves decorativos. La pieza está realizada en barro moldeado, estampillado, cocido y vidriado." [NB: interestingly the illustration showing the restored font shows one of the later fonts referred to in the Cabildo de Tenerife reports of several baptismal fonts made of Genoa marble in this church [source: www.puntoinfo.idecnet.com] but they seem to be dating in the 18th century].
