Described and ilustrated in Mesplé (1970) who describes the ornamentation [cf. Miquel infra] and relates the general style and decor to the font at Saint-Ferréol, in the same area. Mesplé's dating to ca. 1319 is based on the inscription that dates the font at Saint-Ferréol [cf. Index entry]. Described and illustrated in Miquel (1997: 36, 50-51 and fig. 31): octagonal mounted baptismal font of the first quarter of the 14th century, probably ca. 1319; the sides of the basin are vertical, each of the eight panels decorated with one or several motifs: 1)two fleur-de-lys; 2)Greek cross, fleurdelisée; 3)six-point star with a triquetra inscribed in a circle inside it; 4)circle with a vertical line [NB: a suggestion is made in Miquel (ibid.) that this symbol may represent a simplified chrismon: "le cercle barré verticalement peut être la représentation d'un chrisme simplifié à l'extrême", and that at the nearby church a Bazus-Aure, "le chrisme se réduit à un simple cercle", a practice, Miquel (ibid.) continues, "très comune dans le Comminges" -- note that Mesplé does not identify it as a chrismon, but as "un circle divisé en deux parties par un diamètre vertical"]; 5)[unknown ["rosette an spirale"?]; 6)large five-point star in the centre with a six-petal rosette to either side; 7)large six-petal rosette inscribed in a circle; 8)small six-petal rosette inscribed in a circle; the rounded underbowl is plain. The basin is raised on a quadrangular pedestal with hollowed angles. A flat and plain wooden lid, modern, covers the font. There are clear signs of repair to several areas of the basin sides. [NB: the illustration in Miquel -fig. 30- labelled as "Sajas" is actually a photograph of the font at Rieumes]. This type of octagonal mounted font is not uncommon in the area and Miquel names the ones at Mauran, St-Ferréol, Cazères as related in general design. [We are grateful to Alain Costes, of the Archives Municipales, Rieumes, for his information on, and photograph of this font].
