There are ten entries for Norwich [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TG2308/norwich/] [accessed 13 October 2020], one of which records "22.7 churches. 2.57 church lands" in it; a separate entry records a priest and a church in it. The font at St. Etheldreda's is visible in Cotman's illustration of the church interior (1838). It is a baptismal font of the 15th century, in the Perpendicular style; the octagonal basin has vertical sides, the panels decorated with quatrefoil windows that house a blank shield; the graded chamfer has protruding heads at the angles [they are human and quite distinctive but some are much eroded]; the panels of the octagonal stem of the base are decorated with a single trefoil window each; graded lower base splays out and is otherwise plain. Pevsner & Wilson (1977): note: "Removed. It had shields on the bowl and small heads against the underside." In Pevsner & Wilson's entry for Great Fransham (1999) they described the font: "C15, octagonal, shields to bowl, arcading to stem." Knott (2006) informs that the font at Great Fransham "originally came from the busy city centre parish of St Etheldreda in Norwich." [cf. Index entry for Great Fransham].
