Church Notes: original stone church mid-12thC; destroyed [demolished?] mid-13thC, the granite of the old church used for the foundations of the new one; damaged in 1627 fire; re-built 1650; restored 1941-1951;
In Bompus (1908: 35ff): medieval baptismal font of the late 15th century; the basin is supported by four human figures whose heads are the Evengelists' symbols. The baptismal font was cast in bronze by Peter Hansen, of Flensburg, in 1485; it consists of the characteristic bucket-shaped basin produced by workshops traditionally involved in the making of church bells; the upper side just below the rim has an inscription that gives the names of canons Detlev Wulf and Gegor Smit, as well as Peter Hansen's Flensborg bell foundry; the sides are decorated with an arcade of seventeen pointed arch-heads, twelve of which on columns with elaborate capitals and simple bases; the columns themselves are also decorated; the arches containing the most important scenes (Baptism of Christ, Last Judgement, Crucifixion and the Coronation of the Virgin in Heaven) are double, triple in the case of the Crucifixion, the central columns missing; the arch-heads are crocketed and the tops of the columns pinnacled and crocketed; the 'capitals' of the columns are actually full-figure angels holding processional crosses; each of the eight single arches contain a figure holding objects that ought to help in their identification as Apostles [we tentatively identified James the Greater, James the Less, Peter and John]; the basin is raised on four figures at 90-degree angles; the figures are human, wearing long robes and holding a book in the left hand; the heads, however, are those of the symbols of the Evangelists: one human, Matthew's angel; the others an ox' head, a lion's and an eagle's; the names of the Evangelists are spelled out in Latin on the lower end of the basin, in the correspondin area between the heads of the figures. There is no cover present; the inner basin is fitted with a metal support on which the small baptismal dish rests for the infant baptisms, as it is common in the northern churches. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original mid-12thC church here, but the is a granite font at the nearby Hertug Hans Hospitalskirke that is said to be Romanesque and have originally belonged to this church].
