Long (1923) writes: "the font is dated 1620, and is a tolerable imitation of Perpendicular work of the 15th century." In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. The usual Perp[endicular] type, octagonal with quatrefoils, yet dated on the rim 1620." Illustrated in The Dorset Historic Churches Trust; octagonal mounted baptismal font located in a small baptistry in the S side of the nave; the font cover appears Victorian. [source: http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk/over_compton.htm]. [NB: Long [cf. supra] may be right in describing this font as "a tolerable imitation" but, if the font were true Perpendicular, the date '1620' on the rim might be that of its restoration to the church, as is often the case when such a date appears on English fonts of an earlier period]
