Font Notes:
Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874) in Old St. Cuthbert's: "The font, which is opposite the door from the porch, is in the usual form." The same source notes a font "of Caen stone and richly carved" in the new church, referring to the Victorian font dating from the same time as the fabric of the new church, 1861-1862. Octagonal baptismal font located to the left (west) of the entrance; the font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides, a pedestal and a lower base of the same shape. According to The Dorset Historic Churches Trust [http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk/oborneold.htm], "the 15C octagonal font came from the now vanished church at North Woot[t]on." Noted in Long (1923) under North Wootton as a "good specimen" of the octagonal font of the Perpendicular period. Both Newman & Pevsner (1972) and The Dorset Historic Churches Trust (ibid.) shows the High Victorian baptismal font in the new church at Oborne, also dedicated to St. Cuthbert, and locally known as the 'New Church' as opposed to the 'Old Church'. [NB: the Victorian font is not listed in this Index on account of its late date]
