Font Notes:
Parker (1849) writes: "The font, which is plain and good, stands in its original place on two steps, against the third pier between the nave and south aisle. It is lined with lead and the drain is open. It has a heavy canopy of late design, on which traces of painting and gilding still remain. The pattern is tars of different colours on a dark background." The Victoria County History (Northampton, vol. 3, 1930) notes: "A pre-Conquest stone with plait-work upon it was re-used in the rebuilding of the tower, but no part of the present building is older than the 12th century [...] The church was extensively restored in 1866–68 [...] The font is ancient and consists of a plain octagonal bowl and stem on a chamfered base: on the west the stem has a solid projection bringing it in line with the bowl." Described in Davies (1962) as a baptismal font located "just east of the entrance door in the south aisle" [Davies cites the 'Architectural Notes of the Churches of the Archdeaconry of Northampton' (1849: 146) as source]. The Open Churches Trust web site [www.openchurchestrust.or.uk] mentions that "the present font is 16th century". [cf.
