INFORMATION

FontID: 09253NOB
Church/Chapel: Church of St. John the Baptist (C. of I.) [disused] [originally from the Hospital?]
Country Name: Republic of Ireland
Location: Meath / An Mhí, Leinster
Directions to Site: Located on the R162, about 12 km SSE of Kingscourt
Font Location in Church: Reported ca. 1968 in the disused Protestant church of St. John the Baptist
Century and Period: 12th - 16th century, Medieval
Described in Roe (1968: 125): "Until recently in use in this church as a baptismal font was a large stone basin or mortar, said to have been brought in by a former rector from the medieval Hospital ruins [i.e., the nearby ruins of the Hospital of St. John the Baptist]. It is a bowl shaped vessel with two unperforated wing handles at right angles to the bowl", and may have been mounted on a base originally, although there is no knowledge of it. [NB: Roe does not mention whether or not there is a drain hole in the basin but, since she suggests that this may be a medieval mortar, there probably is no drain in it]
