One of two medieval fonts in this church noted in the entry for this church in Norodowy Instytut Dziedzictwo [https://zabytek.pl/pl/obiekty/chelmno-kosciol-farny-pw-wniebowziecia-nmp] [accessed 24 February 2024]: "romańska chrzcielnica z 1. poł. XIII w. (w kruchcie południowej) wykonana z kamienia gotlandzkiego" [cf. BSI entry for Chelmno No. 2 for the other font]. Identified by Mehnert (1934) as a baptismal font similar to the one at Fröjel, on Gotland (Sweden), and named cognate font in Poland to those at Lubiana (Alt Libbehne), Chełmno (Kulm) and Grudziądz (Graudenz). Noted also in Clasen (1939). Described in Berggren (2002: 174 fn42) as the remains of a Gotlandic font in this locality. Catalogued and illustrated in Krasnodębska (2022) with references to Mehnert, Clasen et al. [cf. supra]; she suggests a date between 1350 and 1375. The font consists of a polygonal basin with a rounded underbowl, the whole decorated with an arcade populated with the fancy passant animals characteristic of the Fröjelgruppen fonts; on a pedestal base consisting of a round much-damaged stem, and a splting lower base, also round. No cover present.
