Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Tuulse (1949) as a polygonal (14 sides) Gothic baptismal font made of Gorland limestone and dated to the first half of the 15th century. Described in Berggren (2002) as a baptismal font of the Paradise group; the geological analysis of the stone shows that it probably comes from the same limestone quarry and bed as those from Bruges, Koszalin and Dagsberg [cf. corresponding Index entries]. [NB: the Saaremaa web site [www.saaremaa.ee] states that one of the fonts now [2006] in the Valjala church "belonged to Põide church [and] dates to the first half of the 14th century"]. The original basin survives, damaged and restored; the stem of the base is missing; the round lower base is damaged, a piece missing. No cover present. A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 19 September 2022) notes: "It is believed that the first church was completed in the 1230s. It was adjoined the Ordensburg. The round-arched portals indicate a transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic. The round apse of the early church also points to the Romanesque style. In the 13th or early 14th century, a vault was added to the original church in both directions. After the Soviet occupation in 1944, the church was plundered and vandalized. In 1948 it was closed for the congregation. Renovation started in the late 1950s."
