Described and illustrated by Lord [after Drake] in Diwylliant... (1998-2003, vol. 3: 86 and pl. 112) who dates it to the 12th century: "A stoup from the chapel of a monastic grange at Capel Madog in the Elan Valley is carved with paddle-shaped heads. Its architectutal context suggests a late twelfth-century date, but the iconography is a mystery and the style of the carving resonates strongly with heads on objects such as a small copper alloy plaque of c.150-50 BC found at Tal-y-llyn", thereby underlining the Celtic roots of the style, as he does for the Llanwenog font [NB: it should pointed out that this type of "paddle-head" motif appears carved on fonts of the Romanesque period throught Europe, with several examples in the Pyrénées, on both the French and the Spanish sides].
