Font Notes:
Basin of a baptismal font of the "Fröjelgruppen" [=Fröjel group"] of works exported from Gotland; originally from the parish church in Łubiana, later in the Muzeum Narodowe, in Szczecinie. Noted in Mehnert (1934) as a font of the "Fröjel" type with a polygonal bowl decorated with a dragon motif. Noted in Krzymuska-Fafius (1962). Noted in Kuczyńska (1984). Described and illustrated in Berggren (2002: 159 pl. 15): decagonal basin with a rounded underbowl decorated with a row of saw-tooth motif at the upper basin side; a number of wide rounded arches cover the sides and underbowl, with fancyly-ornamented lions in them; the spandrels of the arches are decorated with leaves; original base missing. Berggren (ibid.) informs that there are thirty-two "enigmatic fonts of the Fröjel type, named after the famous font in a small village church in southern Gotland." The origin is given by Berggren as "Lubiana, Poland [...] now in the National Museum, Szczecin". [cf. Index entry for Fröjel for the font after which the group is named]. Noted in Wardzyński (2010). Noted and illustrated in Pomeranica [http://pomeranica.pl/wiki/Chrzcielnica_z_Lubiany] accessed 22 February 2024]. Catalogued and illustrated in Kinga Krasnodębska (2022): "Schale eines Taufbeckens gotländische Werkstatt, um 1350–1375. Gotland-Kalkstein, polychromiert. Höhe 29 cm, Breite 62 cm, Tiefe 61 cm. Herkunft: aus der Kirche in Alt Libbehne bei Arnswalde; nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in der Sammlung des Nationalmuseums Stettin Inv.-Nr. MNS/Szt/195" [NB: Polish-language description available in the same source]. The basin interior appears to be also decagonal at the upper rim, like the exterior, even if the angles do not show quite as sharp. No cover present.
