Noted in Ghislain (1986). Partial illustration in Barral i Altet (1989). Listed in Drake (2002) as a Mosan Font. Romanesque baptismal font of the 12th century, Mosan group. Ghislain, in L'art mosan (2007) suggests a date around 1150-1155. The round basin has four protruding human heads at 90-degree angles, one of them wearing a mitre [a bishop or abbot?], from which stem four slender colonnettes [not original; a replacement] that rest on the square lower base; the sides of the basin are decorated with varied motifs: 1)a blind arcade of round arches; 2)an acanthus motif]; besides the four detached colonnettes mentioned above, the base has a broad central column, plain, which, like the others, rests on the lower base. Medium-dome metal cover with orb-and-cross finial. The location in which the font now appears, the centre of the nave, would not have been the original. It was moved in the 20th century [source: Syndicat d'Iniative de Gerpinnes www.si-gerpinnes.be]. Catalogued and illustrated in Ghislain (2009) as a baptismal font of the Namurois group, filiation de Saint-Séverin-en-Condroz, made of limestone (calcaire de Meuse) ca. 1160; restored in 1901, with the outer colonnettes of the base replaced in 1965 [NB: but Rahir's report shows the basin unrestored in 1902; was it restored in 1905?]; about half of he basin is the result of the 1901 restoration, and only two of the heads are original; the rest of it is cement work, which includes the inner well, as well as the area where the drain was [would have been?]. Ghislain (ibid.) further remarks on the detail similarities with fonts at Flostoy, Goesnes, Ohey, Saint-Séverin-en-Condroz, Rousson, Wellin, Bastogne, etc. Detailed views of the font appear in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQgOJiEre-8 [accessed 27 November 2023]
A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (email of 27 November 2023) notes: "the difference among the heads is the result of the repair of the heavily damaged font, on which heads were lacking. Only 2 heads are original"
