Font Notes:
Described in Tynell (1913-1921: 77, 155): medieval baptismal font of the Hyllie group made of sandstone; the font is goblet-shaped with a round basin decorated with a band of palmettes; the bottom of the basin is drastically chamferred to meet the square pedestal base. Noted in Rydbeck (1936). Drake (2002: 148, 184) lists this font as head of the Bosarp group and gives the fonts at Glemminge, Hyllie, Östraby and Snårestad as cognates, though not identical. Drake (ibid.) comments adroitly that some of the fonts of this group "have chamfering which looks as though it was an afterthought, a modification of a font which had been made in the normal hemispherical form" [NB: this observation by Drake is reinforced by the odd design of the base, suggesting indeed that the underbowl was altered and the base re-cut or added]. Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 900619F1] as a 'palmettgruppen' baptismal font made of sandstone ca. 1200; the SHM entry reports traces of later paint on it. No font cover present.
