The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 6, pt. 1, 1980) notes: "Clapham was apparently a parish by 1073 [...] The church of St. Mary the Virgin (the dedication is recorded in 1406) [...] is a small and irregular building of flint with stone dressings [...] The north wall of the nave is of the 11th or 12th century [...] The rest of the building is structurally of the 13th century [...] the font is of before 1830". [NB: we have no information on the font from the original church here].
