Mentioned in Cnattingius (1936) as a strange baptismal font in this church ["En märklig dopfunt i Rystads kyrka"]. The entry in Kringla [http://www.kringla.nu/kringla/objekt;jsessionid=10DF139D67D8088C3CE05C1EDB8BB61A?text=linköping+socken&filter=itemType%3Dbyggnad&referens=raa/bbr/21400000016467] [accessed 18 April 2020] informs that the font had been acquired in Italy by captain Henning Ridderstad, a resident of Näsby, and that eventually was donated to the church in Rystad ["I samband med renoveringen skänktes en dopfunt till kyrkan. Den hade hemförts från Italien av kapten Henning Ridderstad, då bosatt på Näsby gård och via kyrkoherden i Rystad hamnade den så småningom i kyrkan]. Ullén & Ljungstedt (2003) mention only the base (stem and lower base) of a plain font made of Gotland limestone; they do not mention the Italian basin. The Italian basin is noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920828F1], but it does not mention the base that Ullén & Ljungstedt (ibidem) do. The old Italian basin is now [2003] inside the Rystad church, raised on a modern cylindrical base; it is round, barrel-shaped, with three horizontal levels of ornamentation separated by a thin triple moulding; the upper and lower lewels are narrow bands of deeply-carved foliage motif; the central band is wide and has some rich foliage motif in the same style as the upper and lower levels, as well as a number of round and oval spaces created by a three-strand band interlace; inside these spaces are: a rampant lion (?), a quatrefoil motif or flower, a pelican (?) plucking its chest, a folaige motif, a passant quadruped, etc. Our source [see credit field] informs that the basin "had been removed from the church and spent much of the 20th century as an outdoor planter [... and] was replaced in the last 2 decades" [source: e-mail communication to BSI from Tyko Kihlstedt].
