Baptismal font made of granite and dated ca. 1200 in Dehio (1991: 100). The entry for this church in Wikipedia [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariä_Himmelfahrt_(Chammünster)] [accessed 19 September 2023] describes the font here as Romanesque and hemispherical in shape; it is badly weathered from its long exposure to the elements in the churchyard previous to its restoration to the interior of the church by Prince Regent Luitpold; the figures of Christ and the Twelve Apostles appear on the basin side, large leaves between them at shoulder height; the base is a later replacement from the Katharinenkapelle by the nearby ossuary ["Das älteste Ausstattungsstück der Kirche ist ein romanischer Taufstein in Form einer Halbkugel. The same source mentions a decorated egg-shaped font located in the south aisle ["Ein weiterer Taufstein in Form eines Eis steht im südlichen Seitenschiff. [NB: the Wikipedia entry (ibid.) gives Schnell Kunstführer Nr. 795 Verlag Schnell & Steiner Regensburg, 4. Auflage 2002, as reference. The basin is roughly bucket-shaped, almost hemispherical and alternates human busts with leaves (oak?); the human busts are very eroded, but are identified in the above source (ibid.) as Christ and the 12 Apostles. The leaves that adorn the gaps between the figures are better preserved and appear to be oak leaves. The base consists of a centre ring and an irregular polygonal lower base. The three appears to be separate pieces, the lower base clearly made of a different stone and perhaps a later replacement of the original.
